View Full Version : Baker Depot Moving Project Begins!

Now that the RR Crew has gotten the track project under control, they needed something else to occupy their time!

Sitting around in the roundhouse one day, they were overheard saying... "Let's move the Baker Depot!"

Work started in earnest this past weekend getting the site work done, and setting up forms for the footings.

Diligent work and careful planning mean you only have to cut, or dig once! Here Ken Ronsberg and Jerry Asher work on setting one of the forms, under the careful supervision of Ken's wife Carole.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s317/mbkerk/WMSTR/DSC05844.jpg

Later in the day Tom Hall and Fred Bohjanen showed up to lend their expertise.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s317/mbkerk/WMSTR/DSC05866.jpg

Part of Tom's expertise was showing Ken the proper way to hold the grade stick!

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s317/mbkerk/WMSTR/DSC05869.jpg

And here their fearless leader, Jerry is looking through the level. not sure what he is looking at, but I think he may be shooting a straight line down the track for some of Jerry Christiansen's tree plantings... (http://www.wmstrcommunityforum.com/showthread.php?t=1249) :biglaugh::eek:

The Baker move is off to a great start! Watch here for more updates as it progresses!

Kim... If you look carefully in the first post in this thread you can see the service building in the background. The exact location will be immediately south of the post office and just north of the east gate crossing on Main Street.

I have a couple I would like to contribute!!!! Can I !!!!!! Please...!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the first one of the very hard working RR Crew moving the depot...

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s317/mbkerk/WMSTR/rrcrew1.jpg

I guess it was a lot of work to get those vehicles lined up so straight like that!

You can tell who the "Boss" is! Somehow the lady with the palm fan keeping him cool scooted away just as I got the camera ready!

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s317/mbkerk/WMSTR/rrcrew2.jpg

Then there was this shot... I just could not resist (sorry Carol!) Seems things were just not moving fast enough, and boredom set in! Seriously... I did hear her say something about a lack of sleep the night before that contributed to the need for more right then.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s317/mbkerk/WMSTR/rrcrew3.jpg

BTW... Did that sunburn hurt? Mine sure did! It was hot out there that weekend!

The guys all did help when help was needed, but most of the time there was not a lot to do except wait until it was time to help again.

And I think that the un-identified excavator operator was non other that Brian Gilroy... at least that is who was digging when I was there. Looked like he knew what he was doing too!

Thanks to Jeff and his crew for taking this on! I can't wait to see it moving!

I talked to Tom Hall on Wednesday and the hole was full of water after the 3" of rain on Tuesday AM.

You might have to lay some ties down and mud it out of there. I am not sure it is ever going to dry out good enough before freeze up! That has got to be the lowest spot on the south end of the show grounds.

Great job to Vern and all who were working and planning this stage of the move for the past 2 weeks. I know Klinger and Phil were there A LOT over the last couple of weeks getting snow moved so that all of that equipment could be gotten to the south end of the grounds!

I was really interesting watching and helping Jeff and Doyle work with that equipment. It became very obvious that they had done that before!

Also, George (Jim's towing owner) bringing out that big wrecker saved us a lot of time jacking. That wrecker lifted one end of that building at a time like there was nothing there!

It was VERY cold out there, and raining for a good share of the move. Hardly ideal conditions to work in... so everyone who braved the elements to be there deserves a big pat on the back! In my opinion, if we had waited one more week the we would have had the same problem we had all last summer. MUD!!!

So, a huge thank you to Vern, the project "champion" for getting it organized for this weekend!

Jeff... I do have some video, and as soon as I have time to get it cleaned up and uploaded, you will have it!

The Baker Depot is on Main Street! The move went very well... took a lot of time, and it still has to be "tweaked" a foot or two, but it is over it's new foundation!

Some knew we were planning on moving it across the grounds with a steam engine. After a few problems we had lining up the needed equipment, we improvised and we did get that done! We used Jim Briden's 40-120 Avery and it was the coolest job I have ever done with that engine! I could not believe how hard that building pulled! I have seen the raw footage of the video we took, and it is WAY COOL!

I am going to get the footage to Tim Dachtera next weekend so that he can work his magic editing it for me, and then it will be posted here.

Until then, I hope someone will post some still photographs here. There were a lot of cameras clicking away!

Thank you to Jeff Holmgren for his expertise, equipment, and for letting me in on the move, and thank you to project champion Vern Nanosky and all who were there today to help!

Stay tuned!

I have a couple of pictures (thank you Ashley for taking them) that I can post.

As I said earlier, I had to improvise a little to make this move happen... specifically I had to hook onto Jeff's big truck as I could not find a tandem axle converter dolly to hold the towing end of the depot up! Jeff's air gauges had the weight on his tractor at about 50,000 pounds! The total weight of the depot is an estimated 80 Ton (160,000 pounds) and if you add in the weight of Jeff's truck, and the rigging under the depot, this was close to a 200,000 pound pull! The dolly wheels under the depot could have had a little more air in them. Might have pulled a little easier, but we accomplished what we wanted to do!

Here we are just starting out. The tires on the Avery "chewed" just a little, but we got it moving on our own and away we went across the south end of the show grounds on the road just south of Earls Mill.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s317/mbkerk/WMSTR/Avery1.jpg

When we started up the hill, the front end of the Avery got really light. I didn't have much steering, and was running short of power. We had her steamed right up to a little over 200 PSI (safety lifts at 205) but we didn't have enough displacement to get the building up the hill. This is right before I stalled out.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s317/mbkerk/WMSTR/Avery2.jpg

So, there is your tease! You will have to wait a few more days for Tim to work his magic on the video! It is pretty cool to watch, and hear it!
