I just wanted to let everyone know that one of the Rollag resident engines is going on another road trip. This year the National Threshers Association (NTA) in Wauseon, Ohio is featuring The Great Minneapolis Line. Jeff Knutson has been asked to bring his newly restored 1899 22 hp return flue tandem compound Minneapolis Threshing Machine Company steam engine to the show. Last year this engine made a trip to Pawnee, Oklahoma for their show when they were featuring Minneapolis. This will be the third year that Jeff has run this engine and it will be the forth state to issue him an operating certificate. Having a brand new boiler on this engine sure makes it easier to move from state to state. This engine sat for probably 60 years or more in Montomery, Minnesota at steam engine Joe Rynda's, before Jeff purchased and restored it. We are just trying to make up for all of that sitting by taking it on these long road trips.
Frank Johnson, who is very involved at Waseon, asked me three years ago if I knew of anyone who had a return flue Minneapolis that they could get for their show. We have been working on putting together the plans for this trip ever since that time. Things were finalized this week so it's time to get the word out that we are going.
I hope that we have better weather then we did last year when we went to Pawnee as it rained the whole time we were there.
I know that there are some others that attend Rollag that are also going to go to NTA this year. If you are going let us know. The show at NTA is Thursday through Sunday the week after steam school (June 24 - 27). So June is going to be a busy month for us as we are steaming up for Breakfast on the farm on June 5, Steam school is June 19-20 and then we head to Ohio. I know that there are others who watch this site from around the country that can't make it to Rollag, but NTA may be a doable trip for them it see this rare engine.
We are very excited about this trip and hope to have a great time when we are down there. By the way, Gerry is not bringing his camper so he will not be able to do his "pull the camper out of the mud as he pushes a Case steam engine with the Mighty Dodge" trick that he did last year.

Hi Tom!
We are thrilled to have the return flue come to NTA! I hope the weather will be wonderful too, but even if it is muddy or a dust bowl (usual choices), it will be a great time! ...make sure you bring that canopy along:thumb:
If anyone has questions about NTA, bringing an exhibit or just coming to enjoy, check out the website: www.NationalThreshers.com (http://www.NationalThreshers.com) or send me a note. Ohio recognizes Minnesota & North Dakota boiler inspections and operator's licenses. We can't compete with Rollag for sheer numbers, but we want to provide the best representatives of a fine line as possible. Twin City is included in this feature also.
We really enjoyed our trip to Rollag last year. I hope your crew enjoys your trip to NTA just as much or more! It is almost a "cultural exchange." Each area has its niches.
Oh yes, Jeff has been kind enough to volunteer the return flue to be the official "steamer of the sweet corn" on Saturday night for the SmokStak dinner. Everyone is welcome, just bring a dish or contribute to the kitty. The stories that get told.....:woohoo1:

Ray and Ramy Wangler are going to be joining us on the trip to Ohio. Maybe Ray can fill us in on how many of his models will be making the trip. I believe that the 60-90 Twin City is also going to be making the trip but I don't know who the operators are going to be.
If anyone else is going to be going let us know.

Hi Ray!
It sounds like you are bringing a trailer full of fun! Your 6 hp portable should go along well with Byler's Case portable that they make ice cream with (have to ask Tristan for the details as he really studied it:thumb:) and we'll find a place to put your other items for all to enjoy.
I'm really looking forward to these folks sharing their items with us and us with you. We all need to share ideas and this will provide a great opportunity!
If anyone else has decided to make the trip, please let us know so we can make your trip better!
Thanks
Beth

Since we planned our trip to the National Threshers Association show in Wauseon, Ohio, on June 24 - 27, we have made plans to take in a few more shows before the engine returns to Rollag. Jeff's engine will also be at the Wisconsin Steam Antique Club show in Chilton, Wisconson at the Calumet County Fairground on August 14 & 15. Then it will be going to the Badger Steam & Gas Club show in Baraboo, Wisconsin August 20 - 22.
This is going to make for a very busy summer for some of us, but after all the work went into the restoration it is time to go play a little bit. When the engine is done with this road trip it will have been issued operating certificates in 5 different states in 3 years. Having a brand new "S" stamped boiler sure makes moving from state to state a lot easier.
We hope to see some of you at these shows.

We have arrived in Wauseon and the 60-90 Twin City and the 22 return flue showed up just before dark. The width of the 60-90 caused some routing problems, but Klinger got it here. Both of the engines are fine and tomorrow morning we have boiler inspection. When we got here they really went out of their way to make us feel welcomed.
I will try to get some pictures to post as the week goes on.

Jeff Knutson's 22 HP Return Flue Minneapolis won the 2010 John F. Limmer Best Restored Engine Award! This is an award that is voted on by the steam engine owners and operators. The level of restoration on the engines at this show is very, very high. There were many engines at this show that were worthy of this award.
Here is the picture of Jeff recieving the award.
The second picture is his Minneapolis from "The Hill" on NTA's hill!

This was a very, very good show to attend. We were treated extreamly well from the moment we drove in on Tuesday afternoon, until we left late Sunday morning. They have a saying at this show- "no belts on the ground" and they mean it. There is always something going on. I would very highly recommend this show and I will definetly be going back, even if the trip is a little long.
Thanks to Emma for the pictures.

Tom, Jeff, Gerry, Mike, Klinger, etc
We really enjoyed having you & the 22 there!:thumb: You were "great guests!":Welcome: It was really nice to have Mark's 60-90 TC there too! What a beast!
The presentation on the Minnie company and the 22's restoration were top knotch. It's award for "Best Restored" was earned...now, you'll just have to bring it back next year too so people can see what is on the exhibitor's plaque! I'll have to ask more questions later on the restoration...
The show went very well and it is a tribute to the countless hours that are put in by our crew and the exhibitors. No show will succeed without a great crew. Your contribution just made it better.
I'm always amazed at how far people will travel for a show which gives us all a chance to share our equipment, memories (some more truer than other...) and just plain enjoy the atmosphere. It is nice to put faces on folks.
I received a special invite from some of your younger members to "Please come to Rollag" this year. I'll do my best and see what happens.
Thanks for coming, let us all steam safely!
Beth
BTW, has the grin come off of Jeff's face yet?:rof:

Congratulations to Jeff, and to the entire crew who put the return flue together. I am sure Jeff accepted the award for you all... It is indeed a 1st place restoration, and I am happy for all involved.

I heard the same thing from Mark Pedersen. Great group out there in Ohio! I am going to have to attend myself when I can make arrangements to do so!
:picture:... More of them if you have them Tom and others!

I got this from the Smokstak Web Site
Here are some interesting characters in front of the 2010 Best Restored Engine......according to one of them....they "are the only 7 people in the world that care about Minneapolis engines!" Somehow, I think he may be joking, but they are right up there!http://www.smokstak.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I hear Jeff Knutson is STILL SMILING!!http://www.smokstak.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gifhttp://www.smokstak.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I sniped this photo from Mark Corson. L-R: KR Hough, Gerry Parker, Andy New, Mike Wahl, Jeff Knutson (proud owner), Tom Dillon, Zach Johnson, Frank Johnson.

They did a great job on this engine, but so did Jerred Ruble on #721--14 hp return flue Minnie. Kramer's 20 Minnie was sweet too....

"according to one of them....they "are the only 7 people in the world that care about Minneapolis engines!"
Well I know there are at least a couple more than 7 that care about Minneapolis Engines http://www.wmstrcommunityforum.com/images/icons/icon7.gif. I am sure you could double that number easily with owners and operators at Rollag that did not make it to the NTA.
Looks like it was a good experience, I wish I did not have to miss it.
