Hi everybody!!!
I've been doing some talking with friends and family about this years steam games, and we are planning on changing it up just alittle bit :hide: we were thinking about having it more than night maybe friday saturday and sunday night (pending weather)

Also this year we are thinking about adding more games and the slow race would be broken up into heat races where the winnner of each round would come back for a final race. The pole race would also be broken up into size classes (just because of wheel bases and turning radious). And NEW for this year barrel races where you put and 55gal drum in front of an engine and try to push it across the finish line!

We also have talked about starting the games earlier. (maybe around 5:30 or 6:00)

I would Greatly apperciate any input from any engineers or spectators or people willing to help PLEASE PLEASE PM me or just ask me when you see me :not_worthy:

Thanks in advance!!!

Please let me know if you got any questions or comments

The camera guy is up for most anything... after 7pm I'm kind of stuck in my music box for a few hours and can't come play until dark:30 tho.. Otherwise, let me where where the camera should be!

Ned,

I am looking forward to steam games again. I am not sure about everynight, but it will be fun. Shelly and I are looking forward to defending our Slow Race title.

I just want to take a couple minutes and thank Ned and all the organizers of the steam games this year. It was a blast. I hope we can continue to do this. I know what we will be doing this year at steam school in the down time waiting for students. Practicing!

It was also very classy to get the participants plaques and the Awards. Very nice indeed.

So thank you to the whole crew that organized and set up the games. We look forward to next year.

Last year I never paid too much attention to the games, and when my my partner on the Avery, Kelly Muhl asked me to go with him the second night and do the blind engineer thing, I was not really all that excited about it, but agreed to team up with him.

After we got going...WHAT A HOOT! Man, it was fun, and the crowd had a blast watching it!

Great idea Ned, Jeff, and all involved! This event can only get bigger!
:congrats:

Is there somewhere on this site that there is a list of the games, and their rules. I would love to suggest this to the guys at the Hawk http://www.hawkmuseum.org/ and have a little something like that at our show. We struggle to get crowds and I think something like this would keep people entertained.

Brad,

Not that I know of off-hand, however I do have some info from one of the steam games crew from last year, and will be seeing him next week.. I'll see if I can get some more details

Brad,
Theres really not an offical list of games there are a number of games you could do pending the amount of room you have (and as I remember from my last visit to the Hawk museum you have plenty of room).

The First game we play is the slow race the track can be as long or as short as you like 50ft to 500ft. We do heat races of 3 or 4 engines at a time and the winner goes into the next round and so on until theres only one left. The rules are simple engines start at the drop of a hat of flag and the last engine to cross the finish line wins if your engine stalls or "dead centers" your out and can't restart.

The second game we do is the pole race. This one take a fair amount of room and its only one engine at time this is a timed event. The engine enters the roped off area and brings the smoke box of the to the pole (we have a 4ft tall by 10in square timber) When the time starts the engine is driven in reverse making a manditory Y turn and then backing the engine up to the pole getting the hitch as close as you can if you knock the pole over its a 15second deduction in your time. Now you can do this acouple ways you can have two engineers working together or one by themselves or like we did last year the one doing the operating is blindfolded and the other engineer giving directions.

A new game for this year is the gate race another timed event. The engine starts at a starting line goes forward where theres a barrel in the middle of the arena the engineer brings the engine to a stop opens the gate "moves the barrel aside" proceeds thru then closes the gate "puts barrel back" then makes a full turn doing the same steps then as soon as the smoke box crosses the starting line the time is stopped.

Rules and Games can always be "tweaked" to suit your showgrounds and time. There are a number of others games these are just a few that we do.

Hope this helps
