We are working on putting together a "WMSTR Treasure Hunt" type of handout for our kids. This will be handed out at the gate when they arrive. We sure could use some help with the ideas for the "Hunt"--which will be things and happenings around the grounds. Example:
"The horse/pony I rode in the Farmstead area was named_________________" Signed by_(someone from the horse area). There will be just a brief explanation for them telling them that anyone with a worker ribbon working in the area of the "treasure" may be asked to sign their handout. Remember, this will involve kids of all ages. Once the "treasure hunt card" is completed, they will turn it in for a prize.
By including many exhibits, we can give the kids (& parents)a chance to discover things about Rollag they may never have seen or known. Please put on your thinking hats and email your suggestions! Thanks for your help!

Wow... What do they say about great minds?

I was talking to someone about this same thing on Steam School weekend, only I was not calling it a treasure hunt... though that name would work.

I was thinking that for every correct sheet turned into the admin building, (or maybe the portable merchandise building if that gets off the ground) we could give the kids a token for a free WMSTR Ice Cream Cone! Might even help us to sell more cones to the parents when they take their kids to the stands to collect their prizes.

Some ideas for questions?

How much pressure does the 40 Avery steam traction engine run? (engineer could sign)
How long is the rope belt on the Murray Corliss engine in the Freeport building?
What was the first year the WMSTR Reunion was held?
How many horses are on the Merry-Go-Round?
How big (yards) is the shovel on the Marion and or Mary Sue Steam Shovels? Those are just ideas! All areas could come up with their own questions... This sounds like a great idea, and cost would be minimal! It would also get kids, and their parents all over the grounds!

Awesome! I'll talk to Dan and we'll put together some trivia questions in regards to the Ortner. I'll also make sure to print up those questions and their answers to hand out to the Ortner engineers and conductors so they are ready to answer the kids' questions!

This is also a super way to take up the time between rides while getting the engine ready to go. I will post the question suggestions here unless otherwise directed.

I think this is really a great idea all around. Just think how many kids see what we have an ever ask anyone anything. This will get them and our volunteers to ask/answer questions and get involved! Great idea!

Great way to get the kids involved Lynette. This was one of the major ideas we had. I'll send you some questions later tonight. Did you need any help with design or printing? I was working on a kid friendly map as well.

Here are some suggestions for questions pertaining to the Ortner:
1. What track gauge does the Ortner run on?
2. What year was the Ortner Steam Locomotive built and who built it?
3. What year was the boiler replaced on the Ortner?
4. How many gallons of water are in the Ortner's water tank?
5. What is the kid capacity of the Ortner train?

Those are a few we've come up with. If you need more, let us know!

Here's one for the ice cream stand people:

How many gallons of ice cream does WMSTR go through during the show?
