Hey,

The video is going! It's been passed up to the power that be for review, and after and suggested changes are made, it will be produced. - It should be ready for a stocking stuffer shortly, depending on the revisions that are made to it.

Just to let everyone know what is going on with the video...

Tim and Chris have done an excellent job with the video. Most of the board has screened the video, (something we asked to be allowed to do before it went into full production) and while it could have gone the way it was, the group thought of some enhancements and additions we wanted to be included.

Logistics is the difficulty in making any changes, as none of us live close to each other, so that adds some time to the project, but we decided to make the changes even though it will add a few weeks to the previously scheduled release date. It is our thought that it will make for an even better project.

Having seen the video, I can promise you all that you are in for a treat! The photography is outstanding, and while everything cannot be covered every year, there is a real good representation of the feature for the '07 show... models and our youth!

Tim and Chris have hundreds of hours into this project so far, and there are a few more to go. Right now the ball is in the board's court as we need to contact a few people for input and additional screening, but this is on the fast track and should be done very soon!

Thanks for your patience, and look for good things very shortly!

We are awaiting comments from a few selected folks to be dubbed into the video. I expect them to be turned in by the end of the month, and then it should not take too long for Tim and Chris to finish it up. As far as ordering one, there is a project in development to make that possible via the internet. Too early to detail it, but I am excited about it. The board will be discussing it at our next meeting.

Maybe Tim has some comments for this thread...?

Hello!

The wait for the 2007 video is almost over! I now have the final commentary suggestions for the DVD, and plan to edit them in, and have the DVD in production in early February. I will update this thread when I have a firm timeline, and also where you can ORDER your DVD's from!

The feedback from those who have previewed it has been positive, so I'm hoping we sell out our supply of 500!

Hey all,

Here are a few pictures from Chris and I finishing up the video with additional commentary added in. We did have a large amount of content to use, however, we are keeping some up our sleeve to use down the future, but I did manage to about lose my voice with 2 or 3 takes per voice-over.

This is a photo of Chris, hard at work in my office.

This is Chris, Still able to smile at me at the end of the production. Many hours spent on this, fortunately no tears cried and no arguments over creative differences. :)

While Chris was busy editing my recorded ramblings, I decided to take a shot of his sound board.

Again, Chris is working and I'm slacking off for a minute, I managed to find my WMSTR membership certificate from when I first became a lifer!

Now I'm hard at work trying to put all the good words we got onto film. I'm really tired of hearing myself talk after all of this! heh

Checking in on the forum. - This is a sample of what the DVD cover might look like when it's produced.

For those technical types, - We did the editing on a spiffy new iMac with Final Cut Studio, and did all our audio work on a Mackie mixer with an Audio Technica studio mic. - We shot on with a Sony-FX1 (HD) camera, and XP2100 (DV).

It will be sent out to production and available shortly.

Thank you to everyone who provided input on this years video. Chris and I were the ones with the cameras, but it was everyone else who helped out with getting on tape, providing information off-camera, taking a breezy afternoon to fly me around (Thanks to Tom Sparrow) and to Mark and Warren for getting that bucket truck where we needed it! (I think I also need to thank our wives for letting the video consume a few hundred ours over the last few months)

OK - That's enough out of me. - There will be an update shortly on when and where you can pick up the 2007 DVD!

Thank you Chris and Tim for letting us see the WMSTR video "Nerve Center"!

This forum contains a lot of pictures of mechanical things... both shiny and new, as well as greasy, dusty old machinery... after all, thats what we're all about. I find it refreshing to get a peek into some other aspects of the show that are equally as important, and where hundreds of hours are spent by our members that a good share of our members and visitors may overlook. There are many, many things like this that go on behind the scenes long after the show is over, and the engines and tractors drained and put away for the long winter.

I am really pleased that you and Chris were able to work together and carve out a niche for yourselves in the organization! I hope it continues to work for many years!

How about a show book "behind the scenes" thread Jean?

Chris and Tim, you guys are amazing!! Like Mark said, the work you guys are doing for the show is way beyond anything the average visitor or member would know. Could you give us “non techie types” a little more on the equipment you’re using to do this job and some more on you guys as to how you learned this work? For instance: Where’s the equipment (mixers, audio, cameras…..etc) from and what does it do when not producing steam videos? Give us a little information on what your normal day job is and how it fits into steam video making……….etc. Furthermore: I promise never to tease Chris about being clean again!.....well maybe not “promise” J

Thanks
Ray

Ray, sorry for the lag, I had a great reply a week ago, and I hit a wrong button, and wham, my two page novel was gone.. (even we geeks have issues at times)

Anyways,

Here is a rundown.

Cameras:

Sony HDR-FX1 - Hi-Def grade camera that I own, and shot about 60% of the footage you'll see on the DVD. I purchased it for my own business, however, the anticipated target base I would use it with, fell out.. (Real Estate) so, when I'm not using it at the Hill, I let a close friend borrow it for his Church to use - I figure it has to be good karma! In terms of quality, it's a step below the 'large format' cameras you'd see being used by news people, and that general category I think. I got tired of my little handicam, so, now I guess when I shoulder this thing up, most people assume I'm important and let me thru!

Sony 2100XL - This is a show owned camera that shot the rest of the footage. It needs to be taken into the shop this spring for some routine upkeep and cleaning, but it's a higher end DV format camera on the consumer level products, but still a great camera for being about 6 years old.

Nikon D80 - This is my still camera I used for the ariel photos, and a number of photos on the ground. I provided the showbook crew with a DVD full of photos, so some may show up in the upcoming books! - Again, I bought this for myself, and use it at the hill, as I'm an avid photographer, and trying improve my photo skills in hopes of turning it into a little extra cash down the road.

As for the production equipment, Here we go...

I've got a new Mac desktop computer, stacked to the gills with RAM and the show has purchased an external drive for archival and storage of the original master video files. Chris and I did the voice overs with his Mackie sound board, and a studio grade Audio Technica microphone. (if anyone is trained in broadcast, and wants to help with the voiceovers, please contact me!!!) The editing is done in Final Cut Studio.

I'll let Chris fill in the blanks for his day to day routine and how this work fits in, but he has years of audio/video experience as well. As for me, - I'm a computer geek, and I'm real happy that while I can't explain the inner workings of a steamer, I can pretty much handle and computer, audio, video, technology related task on the hill. I am a Systems Administrator by day, and by night, I develop websites, install networks and commercial audio/video systems, so I pretty much live technology!

Rick,

No problem! I'd love to come along, I've just never known the right people, or found an engine that already didn't have people hanging off any part that wasn't hot! :)

Tim, thanks for the great reply! It really shows that you can be a steam show icon without knowing steam. Great work!! If you get time during the show, come up to miniature land and run one of my engines for a while. We'd love to have you! It's not near the offer Rick made, but it's the only one I have. Thanks again for all your hard work........we REALLY appreciate it.

Picked the video up at Larson Welding Saturday, and it is great. The photography, editing, and music, narrating, all was very well done. I especially love the sun rising at the beginning of the movie and setting at the end. Nice touch.

Recieved a copy of the dvd and all I can say is a very well done job.

And thanks to Markel for taking on another job. Would it be correct to refer to her as the DVD CIRCULATION MANAGER.

Thanks Markel
