My name is Andy Glines and I live in the extreme SW corner of Indiana and I run a little 16 HP Huber. Some of you here already know me. Until now there has been no regulation of historic steam engines or their operators. I looks like change is comming to the Hoosier state and a group of steam folks is starting the Indiana Historic Steam Association to represent the owners and operators with the state authorities. I am working with a committee to develop and operator licensing and training program. I know that MN already has a prgram in place for historic steam operation so I came here for information. By gathering info from othere places that have a licensing program we hope to develope one that promotes safe operation and is likely to be recognized in other jurisdictions. I'll start out with a couple of questions but please feel free to add anything that could help. What training is required to get a MN license? How much does the license cost? Is there a written test? Is there a practical test? How long is your MN license good for?

Check out this link. It should answer your questions. The Minnesota Steam Engineers Association works very closely with the boiler inspectors to keep the regulations workable and yet keep our hobby safe.

Mike, I finally called Tom Hall last night. Thanks for the contact. It sounds like he will be able to help us a lot with our efforts in Indiana. I sent you a PM also.
