George Hamre
George Hamre, age 82, Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly Audubon, MN, died Saturday March 15, 2008, surrounded by his family.
Edward George Hamre was born on April 28, 1925, in Atlanta Township in rural Lake Park, Minnesota, to Carl and Ora Engum Hamre. He grew up and attended Country School before graduating from Lake Park High School in 1943. He then served in the United States Army during WWII. He returned home and attended Agriculture College in Detroit Lakes. On October 22, 1949, he married Donna Sayler in Atlanta Lutheran Church in rural Lake Park, Minnesota. They farmed in the Lake Park and Audubon areas for many years. He also worked for Powers Construction of Fargo, ND and Miracle Water of Detroit Lakes. After retiring, he worked for the Fergus Falls Stockyards, WE Fest, Audubon Auto, and for several area farmers. He was a member of the VFW in Audubon and the American Legion in Lake Park. He loved to play cards, solve puzzles, and attend the Steam Thrashers Reunion in Rollag, MN. He and his brother received a Century Farm Award in 2005. He was very dedicated to the VFW, American Legion, and 1st Lutheran Church. He had an unspoken love for his family and grandchildren. His humbleness, kindness, and hearty smile will be greatly missed.
Survivors include wife, Donna; 3 sons, Mark (Kathy), of Lake Park, MN, Clark (Leann), of Fergus Falls, MN, Clayton (Cathy), of Audubon, MN; 1 daughter, Judy (Rod) Gartner, of Fargo, ND; 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Kennard Hamre, of Lake Park, MN; and mother-in-law, Susan Krogen, of Detroit Lakes, MN.
He is preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Carl Hamre Jr.
