I thought that I would start a thread on the 75hp Case. For some reason I seem to have acouple photos of that engine :biglaugh:.
For starters its a 1913 75hp Case ser. number 30452 owned by WMSTR it is one of the first engines that came to Rollag as far as I know. She has a sister engine a 1915 (I might be wrong on the year) 50hp Case they were both owned by Carl O. Johnson one of the founding members of WMSTR.

I'm the good looking one in the bibs!!!:biglaugh:Next to me is my older brother Ed and in front of us is my 1/3 scale 65hp Case threshing outfit.Ed cares for the little one during the show. For two younger guys we have combined almost 60 years of going to Rollag under belts!!!

Hi Eric,

Nice looking engine. Nice looking scale setup.

Thanks for the picture of warmer weather and blue skies at Rollag.

This has to be one of my favorites from a spark show we had "chemical enhancements" on the flywheel and sparks coming out of everywhere!!!

Its one thing to be able to throw sparks up the stack but it takes extra talent to shoot them down on the ground too!:biglaugh:

remember a bad day at rollag is still better that a good a day at work!!!!

Heres a picture of the tractor pull in 2006.
When Doug Tews was running the engine he told me let people see the engine working and moving he was a big fan of giving rides. I would like to think I'm honoring him by carring on a tradition of giving rides and letting people see her work.

At the wheel is my right hand man Tyson S. in the back hanging on the canopy mount is Nicole W. I'm at the levers and can't tell who else is on board.

If anyone else has any pictures please post them :picture:

Here is one for you Ned. It is my wife Shelly practicing at Steam School in 2006 with you giving instruction. I can't seem to get her very interested in any of the traction engines, but get her around a Locomotive and she is in heaven. Because of the time you and everyone else give at Steam School she is part of the Ortner crew and has been made an engineer at the C&H Railroad in Topeka KS. (12 inch gauge coal fired). She is a good fireman and would love to get involved with the Porter someday. But you and the 75 played a part in her positive experience there at Steam School.

Thanks for the kind words Darren! I hope that she had a great time on the engine. Anytime she wants to "play" on the engine there will always be a spot.

Here a picture of maybe some future rollagers??? hoping down after going for there very first ride on an engine. Picture with me is my good friend Billy Malvin we must have given rides to hundreds of kids and adults at the 2007 show. We parked up by the carnival and hung the signs from the sides of the tenders and took people on alittle ride around. It was amazing some people had come to WMSTR for years and never got the chance to ride and some it was their first time out to the show but after the ride they all had a big smile on their face! :)

Erik,
I like the idea of the sign! When I was three years old, I got my first ride on a steam engine (a Case) out at the Pawnee OK show....I ain't been right since! I'd say many a young person has been forever altered by that first ride on a traction engine.....and I try to be pretty generous by giving rides on my engines at shows. I well remember the days as a youngster looking at engines steaming around at showgrounds, and wanting to get a ride soooooo bad!

I've been going to steam shows all my life, and I have never been offered a ride on an engine. Although, I do remember one year at Rollag, probably in the early 90's, when they hooked the shuttle wagons up to a couple engines on Saturday night and made a loop around the main road.

Welcome to the forum MrGoat, and thanks for posting!

The best way to get a ride, if you can't find Eric... is to wait until parade time and hang around the engines. Look for an engine where there might be some room, and then politely ask if you can ride through the parade. Hopefully you get a polite answer one way or the other. Of course, safety is always our first concern, but if that is covered, most engineers are happy to have you along! We have paraded a lot of nice people on Jim's Avery, and are always happy to oblige if we are able.

The Porter? Well! Hopefully that "someday" is a long-way off someday! The Ortner and her crew are SO happy to have Shelly on the team. We got lucky grabbing her interest and we hope she sticks around for a LONG, LONG time!

74 days to steam school!:)

If you ever get a chance to see the 75 belt up to the Prony Brake, with Ned at the helm, you will be in for a awesome spark show! It is amazing what he can do with the engine on that prony brake.

Great pictures Ned, that sign is great.
If Ned doesn't have room come on over to the Gaar Scott if there is room we will give you a ride in the parade.

Thank you Sean and Mark for your kind invitations. I'll definately saunter over to steamer row at parade time if I make it up this year. I'm hoping to start a new job around that time.

Sean, are you a Nelson of bulding fame?

I was sitting at home reading through this thread and when I first started it I was thinking about just posting acouple pictures everyone says they want to see pictures when they come here (and I know not just of a 75hp Case) but I figured what the heck I'll start a thread and its really neat to hear the feedback. :)
It just got me really thinking and I guess I've known it for sometime its not the engine or engines its the people. :o
I've thought twice about posting this pic. (because I parked infront of the engine) but if you look close we're having lunch and its a time to relax and share stories with friends old and new. ;)

It is the secret and the most important part of our show. The "REUNION".

Reunion - A gathering of people that have been separated.

Hi Ned
i like 75s too. that was the main engine i learnt on. and the first engine my Great uncle bought(1959) when they were getting back in steam. dad and grandpa helped a lot in getting it restored. its a 1911 model and then they fixed up a 1913 75 at the Austin Museum and ran it for many years. our cousins still run it down there. dad inherited our 75 from uncle Doug in about 1970.
they were Cases main work horse for the mid to bigger farmer back in the day and were fairly cheap, simple, snappy, powerful and easy to maintian. they pulled 8 bottoms in sod and ran the bigger threshers. I always thought the cast stack had a unique sound too:thumb:
heres a poor picture from Rollag in 2001 i believe. showing the 75 on the right. i dont think you ran it then, but maybe? an older guy used to run it. Also pictured is Jims 1912 80, now down at Andersons in Sd. Bridens famous house 110, and the Axvig/briden 10 ton roller.
I also remember the glow stick spark show in '06:congrats: Did you do one last year? what PSI do you get on the old girl? ttyl

Colin,
Is there a such thing as a bad picture when theres a Case in it? ;) and what a line up I don't think you could go anywhere else and see a row of Cases like that other than maybe an Expo!!!
In 2001 I was helping run the engine Doug Tews was head engineer he passed away acouple years ago. He taught me alot I started running with him in 95 or 96 and got my lic. in 98.
The 75's working psi is 100 lbs
The 75 up in Austin is that the one with extentions canopy and headlamp?
