Arlen H. Nelson
Arlen H. “Boogen” Nelson, 70 of Rollag, Minnesota died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Arlen Hall Nelson was born May 17, 1937 in Hawley, Minnesota to Norman and Violet (Hall) Nelson. He grew up in Rollag and attended rural school at Woodland District #3 in Rollag. He graduated from Oak Grove Lutheran High School of Fargo in 1955.
Arlen married JoAnn Thorvaldson on April 11, 1959 at Rollag Lutheran Church. They made their home on the original H.C. Nelson homestead near Rollag and in 2006 received the Honor of Century Farm Homestead.
Arlen farmed until 1965 and then began working for Otto G. Larson Construction and Dahl Construction both of Moorhead. In 1980 he began his own construction business which he continued until his retirement in 1999.
Arlen was one of 12 charter members of the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion. Over the years he served as Vice-President and Secretary. He continued to be an active member of the organization until his death. He had a deep passion for Case tractors and steam engines.
Arlen served as deacon, trustee and sexton at Rollag Lutheran Church throughout the years. He also was a Township Supervisor for Parke Township.
Arlen will be remembered for his quick wit, kind heart, great storytelling and his knowledge of history.
Arlen’s life revolved around his family. He enjoyed watching his children and then grandchildren’s activities ranging from sports to music concerts. One of Arlen’s favorite pastimes was driving his truck to Rollag with his grandchildren in the back and stopping at the Rollag Store for coffee and treats. Once the Rollag Store closed, the rides in the back of his truck were replaced by rides on his new 4 – wheeler.
He is survived by his wife JoAnn; two sons, Eric (Sandy) Nelson and Paul (Cindy Wenner) Nelson all of Rollag; one daughter, Gretchen (Dave) Knain of Moorhead; eight grandchildren, Josh and Ashley Nelson of Rollag, Brent Anderson of Moorhead, Kayla and Kristie Nelson of Rollag, and Paige, Alyssa and Anna Knain all of Moorhead. He is also survived by two sisters, Marlene (Rey) Larsen of Newport Rhode Island and Leanna (John) Freid of Virginia Beach Virginia; one sister-in-law, Evangeline Heng of Rollag, and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Noel.
Funeral Service: Monday at 11:00 in Rollag Lutheran Church, Rollag.
Visitation: Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 with a prayer service at 7:00 in Rollag Lutheran Church, Rollag. The visitation will continue on Monday two hours before the service at the church.
Interment: Rollag Lutheran Cemetery, Rollag.
