Working on a 50 Diesel. My neighbor who is now 91 years old bought it new at Farmers Union Oil Company in Wahpeton on August 25, 1954. Ross farmed up until about 5-6 years ago. I used to stop and visit him and tried to buy this tractor but he would never sell it even though it had been parked for years after it started knocking. He loved farming and when he quit a few years ago his main tractor was an SMDTA Farmall. He loved to visit and had a lot of interesting stories. He told me about being a POW at the end of World War II, how he started farming and going south on harvest runs after the war. Ross's son talked to us about this tractor at the sale. It was the only new tractor Ross ever bought.
Said his Dad bought it along with a 5 bottom plow but it could not pull it very well. They hooked the F-20 to the front with two chains and a tire for cushion and plowed that way.

His auction sale was held in October and my neighbor John bought the tractor. I am doing the repair work on it. I still get to play with it and someone else is spending the money! Engine work is being done and hope to have it running soon.

    Hi Pete,

It sounds like you got the sweet end of this deal. You get to work on the tractor and play with it. You don't have to pay for the repairs, fuel, tires or storage!

Is a complete restoration planned? Or, is the plan to make the tractor mechanically sound and let it be in it's work clothes?

    Later,
    Jerry Christiansen

Pete is this tractor going to make a appearance at Rollag when the restoration is complete? Also is the engine stuck? (Just curious) Does this CockShutt have the supper high speed road gear?

I like the part about playing without paying... though usually one ends up paying in one way or another... even if it's not cash! Thanks for the picture and the story Pete!

Jerry, we are going to make it mechanically sound first. I think he will get it painted also. I kind of hope he leaves it the way it is.

Josh, this one does not have the super fast road gear that I am aware of. I think you are thinking of the older Coops. The engine was stuck a little but the biggest problem are the 3 destroyed pistons. New ones are not available but i have found 4 used ones that will work with some repair. The 273 Buda diesel was known for eating up pistons from what I have been able to find out.

Pete, If it would be possible to get his story (especially about being a POW, buying and farming with the tractor ) and share it when the tractor is restored and possibly displayed at Rollag would be a great story/display. The human struggles the owner endured tied in with mechanical challenges that the tractor went through would make an interesting story/display. Oh, thanks for the pictures.

Greg, any story would have to rely on my memory! He is still alive but in a nursing home far away from here. The last time I visited with him was 4-5 years ago.

I see it has been awhile since we started on this thing. Just installed the engine tonight. Hopefully have some pictures of a running tractor early next week. If anyone is thinking about fixing a tractor with a Buda diesel, it is not for the faint of heart! Glad the owner was willing to spend the money to do it right. I am a tractor nut and am willing to spend to fix but this one might have sent me over the edge if it were mine.

Have been trying for the last 3 nights to post 2 videos on here. I still have not been able to get it done! I am not the brightest crayon in the box but I am also not the dullest. Very frustrating.

It's a Facebook video. If one does not have a Facebook account, you cannot see it.

    Katy showed it to me!

If you post it to Youtube Pete... it will play here.

This should work better! This is right after startup. Had it belted up to bleed out the fuel system instead of grinding on the starter.

Plowing with it a couple of days later.

Stopped by the owner's place last night and he was testing out the hydraulics on his wood splitter.
