HI all,

If I looked at my calendar correctly, Steam School 2019 will be the weekend of June 15 and 16. I am sure that Steam School 2019 is full.

Again this year we will be offering Steam School graduates an opportunity to get time on steam engines as they prepare to take the engineer's test. When the Class of 2019 is in the classroom in the mornings, graduates are welcome to get hours and check items off the task list on the affidavit that can be found here.

The tasks on the list are:
1) Bring boiler up to operating pressure from cold start
2) Maintain boiler water level using both types of feeding devices
3) Monitor boiler water level with tri-cocks
4) Test safety valve manually while under pressure
5) Blow-down boiler, Including sight glass
6) Prepare boiler for inspection, Ultrasonic and Hydrostatic
7) Belt Engine up to pulley
8) Operate engine on level, uphill, and downhill terrain
9) Perform shutdown of engine (Emergency)
10) Drain and clean boiler for storage

Engines will be belted up to the Prony Brake to provide practice firing underload. The load can be varied and the engine can stop at any time if needed. Practicing here should allow a person to check off items 2 - 5 and possibly 7. We would like to have an engine crew or two lined ahead of time up to do this.

Last year the Port Huron crew offered to walk a bunch of students through draining the boiler, removing handhole covers, flushing the boiler, replacing handhole covers, filling the boiler with water and bringing it up to pressure. I believe they were able to check off items 1 - 4 and 10.

I talked with the Port Huron crew at Steam Up 2019. They are willing to repeat what they did last year. They said they could work with up to 4 students. Are any other engine crews willing to do this?

If you are a member of an engine crew that would like to volunteer to belt up to the Prony Brake, or go through the routine the Port Huron crew did last year, please post here or send me a PM.

If you are a Steam School graduate and would like to get some time, please send me a PM and let me know what you would like to do. Just like Steam School, the spaces will be limited. Sign up early if you are interested.

Again it starts this year there are lots of people that want to signup for steam school and ask online and I have to send them Tom's home mailing address. Can we PLEASE figure out a better system??? :soapbox:

That is the way Tom wants it... I guess any changes would have to be worked out through him.

He does check email every so often so maybe that could work?

Hi all,

Last call for people wanting to get time on a steam engine so they can take the Steam Engineer Test. If you don't contact me before June 8, there is no guarantee space will be available. PM me here or use this email address: [email protected]

Thanks Jerry. Great idea. Once again a thank you to all the crews out there willing to help and participate. Last year I believe there were 6 engines running and available to the steam school participants. What a great turn out! We let the people from out of state and out of country have a priority of the use, because they may not get the opportunity again. I think they appreciated it very much. Everyone was excited and all the crews were very generous and kind to us novices and I for one appreciated all their hard work and dedication. A wonderful weekend. Sid

Jerry, I plan to have two engines running up in the expo area Saturday. We'll be putting out a tremendous amount of power to run Darrel Dey's ice cream and hot dog stand. I realize the humor, but for the most part, if you can run a model under moderate steady load, you'll know all the steps to run a full sized engine in a saw mill. Monitoring steam pressure, water level, engine operation, communication with the driven load,..........etc. Furthermore, those hours count 1 for 1 on the affidavit. They don't scale them!!

Hi Ray,
Thanks for the update and info about making ice cream on Expo Hill. If I ask real nice, will you deliver some to me?

Later,
Jerry Christiansen

Thanks Ray.

If you deliver to Jerry, drive don't walk because he will be at another show on Saturday. I on the other hand will be at Rollag. Any chance for a delivery to me? :D No need, my keen sense of direction a olfactory powers will lead me to nirvana.

Sid,
I was hoping to trick Ray in to making a long drive for me. Now I will have to buy my own ice cream at the Hawk Museum.
