HEAR YE, HEAR YE!!! In accordance with the mission of the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion (WMSTR), the Education Subcommittee of the WMSTR Board of Directors announces the formation of the School of Fine Arts, majoring in “Rollagology” (the study of all things Rollag)!!

What in the world does that mean??

WMSTR is starting short courses related to past technologies, that are similar to, but different than Steam School with the intention of offering them once every year.

The weekend of July 13-14, 2019 is reserved for an educational opportunity available for a limited number of people. On a first come first served basis 45 students will be able to attend, three, four hour classes in areas demonstrated at WMSTR. The 2019 subjects are BLACKSMITHING, PERIOD CORRECT ADVANCED GRAIN SEPARATION TECHNOLOGIES, and STATIONARY INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION. All will be taught on Steamer Hill, at Rollag, MN. A four hour “free time” will be available on Sunday afternoon for students to return to their area of interest to visit with instructors or travel home. A summary of topics and class itinerary are laid out below.

Blacksmithing: You’ll learn the tools and metal properties needed to produce beautiful artwork. Members of the Northern Minnesota Metal Smiths Guild will assist you in basic metal forming techniques and give you basic information on heating and beating steel, ending in a project you take home with you. You’ll learn the “who’s who” of blacksmithing in our area and how to become more involved in the hobby. A perfect opportunity for the beginner and a fun ½ day for the novice. Instructors are: Kevin Fettig, Keith Johnson, and TBD members of the Guild.

Period Correct Advanced Grain Separation Technologies:

You’ll get to see the parts of a separator laid out and explained to you in detail as to their function. There will also be many diagrams of separation technologies that were introduced early on and which ones were successfully put into practice. No more standing next to a threshing machine and wondering “what’s going on in there?”. You’ll be able to explain all the parts and their function. Furthermore, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with your instructors during the show (Saturday, Aug 31) and tour the field threshinig area discussing what you learned in class. Perfect for the hobby threshing show attendee, someone wanting to restore a machine or just become more aware of the inner workings of a separator. Instructors are: Gerry Parker, Todd Hintz, and Jeff Knutson

Stationary Internal Combustion Engine Maintenance and Operation: You’ll learn about hit and miss governors, engine timing and control. Magnetos and coil firing will be discussed in detail. Fuel systems and the parts that need maintenance to make your engine run well are covered. You’ll also learn where to go for parts, accessories and anything else needed to restore an engine. Perfect for the beginner wanting to know the basics of these old engines and the technologies that made them so reliable. Excellent source of information and knowledge for the novice wanting to restore “Grandpa’s engine” or “one that sits behind the barn”. The class is likely to change your view of these marvels of engineering forever. Instructors are: Keven Withers, and TBD experts in the field.

Registration is currently open and will end at 2359hrs (11:59 p.m.) on 2/2/2019. On line registration is preferred by using the url and following the instructions within, as well as US Mail Service to:

    Jeff Knutson (Education Registration)

    2625 Sungate Dr.

    Fargo, ND 58103

The Postmark time and date will be used to determine registration order. A fee of $40 per student needs to be submitted at the time of registration for class materials, refreshments, facilities, transportation, and Saturday lunch. Any registration forms received in excess of the 45 students will be fully refunded. Once your registration is accepted, the fee is non refundable since it is anticipated that we’ll receive more applications than there is room for and some people will be turned away. Saturday evening meal and Sunday lunch will be provided for an additional $10 and $5 respectively. Primitive camping is available and included in your class fee. Students under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Thanks Crystal, that's all TDac (Tim Dachtera) of course. There's a bit of confusion in the announcement, so I want to make it clearer (hopefully). All students will attend all three classes. Each class is 4 hours long and students will rotate among them. Two classes Saturday, one class Sunday.

This, of course, is the 2019 curriculum. If a unanimous group wants to change that in 2020 we can consider longer classes and less of them..........this is OUR (meaning the entire show membership deal. We do what we want!!

I am registered as of today including payment. I did all of it on my phone. It was very easy to use. I am very excited and looking forward to learning about these areas on the hill.

New announcement!! We have 10 seats left and Tim will leave the registration open until 2/28. It WILL close at that time to allow plans to move forward. We're extending the date because the administrator (me) should have sent this notice in mid January. thank you and good night!

Hey Ray, we are all looking forward to a fine and educational weekend. My two sons-in-laws, my grandson and myself are scheduled to be in attendance. Given our past history, at least two of us should be awake:).... Love this idea. Expanding this would be fun as well. Sid Fossan

We had a birthday party last night for one of my granddaughters and my Grandson and my Son-in-laws asked about more information regarding Rollagology. Now I can tell them that information is forthcoming. Great timing . Thanks for the update. We are excited about the event and look forward to being instructed by such skilled and quality professors.

Bringing this back to the top of the list, Rollagology weekend is less than 3 weeks away. Instructors and students are meeting at the Merchantile Friday, 7/12/19 at 7:00 pm. Social hour in Steam Hollow campground starting at 8pm, all active members are invited to the social. Bring a chair and a great story!

    Hi all,

Another bump to the top. This sounds like a good weekend.

It is too wet to bale hay at home, so head to the Hill. If you aren't involved in the classes, I bet a lot of Rollagians will be on the grounds. You should be able to find something to do to help get ready for the show.

I am so looking forward to this event since I signed up last October. Imagine, Blacksmithing, Grain Separation Technologies and Stationary Internal Combustion Engine Maintenance and Operation all in one weekend!!! What I know about each of these items you could put into a thimble, so If I can regenerate a brain cell or two, maybe I can store some valuable information. I am looking forward to seeing everyone. It is going to be fun. In advance, can I sign up again for next year?
