Updates to the Red Brake

These pictures are from September 10.





If you look near the top of the 540 PTO splines, you can see that the shaft has twisted a bit. This shaft has definately had a bit of torque run through it.

On September 10 Jon H, Scott F, Charles F, Bryce H, Seth H, Jane C and I met at the Red Brake to take the shaft out of the chain case.
Right now the chain case looks like this.



Both PTO shafts and all the other inards have been removed. The Brake is capable of running with a belt belt right now. Larson Welding is going to remake both shafts. They will both be the large sized so that hopefully we won't twist them again.

Here is a part of the tear down crew.

Putting the chain case back together will be done very early next season.

I reminded you not to apply too much brake when I had my B John Deere on that shaft!

Seriously, I enjoyed hearing how the chain case was originally put together when we had lunch a month ago. You and Jonathan are a wealth of information on that machine.

Thanks for the warning about the torque your B has. Next time we will have to be sure to run it on the belt.

That's his B Jerry, you should ask him about his R. I am sure it would have way to much power for you to even test it!!!!

It would have probably pulled it off of it's concrete pad, but alas... I have no PTO shaft so I couldn't taste a thing :-(

But... I have to throttle back to keep the water in the pond when I am on the pump!

Hi everyone,

I was trying to edit and add information to the pictures in the previous post. I exceeded the editing time and got locked out. That means you will have to read here and look at the small pictures above.

Not so much an update to the Red Brake, but a fix on the water line that brings water from the Blue Tank to the standpipe by the Red Brake. Last year we discovered the pipe was broken the day before the show.

Saturday, August 8, Craig M and Justin M (perhaps others were involved, too) started digging by the Blue Tank with the excavator heading to the standpipe. They got about 25 feet out from the Blue Tank and found good pipe the rest of the way.

The first picture shows a run of blue pipe, that must be a real old installation that failed. The white pipe to the right of the cone is good pipe that goes the rest of the way to the standpipe. This must have replaced the blue pipe. I don't remember that, does anyone else? The white pipe to the left of the cone is a piece of replacement pipe that we set in the trench as we were working.

The second picture shows the replacement pipe in place with enough backfilling to support the pipe. At this time we turned on the water to flush the system and be sure we didn't have any leaks.

The third picture shows some pipe and failed pipe that we replaced.

The fourth picture shows what the site looks like when we left. Some final grade work needs to be done, but we ran out of time.
