Endowment Building and Boardwalk

Hi all,

The Endowment Building used to be on the east side of Main Street where the Dress Shop is now located. Last summer it got moved across the street in between the Boutique and the General Store. Before the building could be moved, a very unhealthy tree needed to be removed. The picture below shows the space between the two buildings after the tree was removed. I apologize for the picture being sideways.

If you look closely, you can see a bit of the boardwalk on each end of the opening. We had to remove that section to get the tree out and the building in.

This is how the building was moved. Thank goodness for big lifting equipment.

A picture from the southside (in front of the Boutique) looking north after the Endowment Building was in place and the Boardwalk repaired. A bit of the temporary handrail by the side of the General Store can be seen.

Here is a picture looking south from in front of the Mercantile. The handrail mentioned above can be seen along with the Endowment Building.

A load of green treated lumber to start building a new Boardwalk.

The first section of the new Boardwalk. This picture was taken on Steam School Weekend. The work had been done a couple weekends before, June 6. We mostly did some thinking and planning Steam School Weekend.

Saturday, June 27 we got to work again.

Looking north from the Boutique. The first part has a slight slope, the section that lines up with the walkway to the Endowment Building is level, then the part to the gas pump has a slight slope. All slopes are NOT steep enough to be defined as ramps and thus do not require handrails. The new walkway is 6 feet wide. The area in front of the General Store is 132 feet wide.

Looking directly at the General Store. We still need to finish the area from the General Store to the Mercantile. We plan to work on that the afternoon of July 5.

More info to come,

This is similar to a picture in the first post. It was taken by another crew member. One crew member and a part of a second crew member can be seen.

That may not look like a very big bucket of gravel. That was enough load that the rear wheels bounced off the road on every bump. Yes, that is a vintage Bobcat. It is a 500 made somewhere between 1964 and 1966. I suppose I could bring it to the Show as a display.

If you start on the left and look closely, you can see the first several feet have a slight slope. Then there is a level area where the walkway goes up to the Endowment Building. The last part on the right slopes down again to get to the area in front of the Mercantile. None of the sloped areas are steep enough to be considered a ramp and therefore do not need handrails. We plan to put handrails on areas where there is a drop off next to the walkway.

Hi again everyone,

A few more pictures of work done Sunday, July 5.

We worked on the last part of the project, from the General Store to the Mercantile. The supervisor is wearing an orange t-shirt. Bryce H is running the tamper. Seth H is leaning on the shovel. Breckke K has his back to us by the post of the Mercantile. I think Xander K has his back against the post of the Mercantile.

Now we can see Xander's front side. Dan K is busy screeding the gravel between the 'sleepers'. Abby has her back to us on the right. In the background from left to right are Breckke, Bryce and Seth.

Amanda K running a shovel. The rest have already been named.

A view looking to the south from the Mercantile. The new boards by the Mercantile are 8 footers, the boardwalk used to taper off to the right starting by the post. between the buildings are 14 foot boards, close to the General Store they taper down to 12 foot boards.

A slightly different angle of the area between the buildings.

Looking to the north from the Ladies Activites Building. The main part of the project is done. We have some things to do around the walkway to the Endowment Building. The ramp is for people that work in the Endowment Building to access the building after they park their golf cart behind the building.

Please remember, this is a walkway, don't drive vehicles on the boards.
